Earth Funeral is proud to announce that our soil transformation services are available to the families of New Jersey.
This gentle, natural, and environmentally conscious alternative to traditional burial and cremation comes as the state moves to formally approve the practice. While new legislation awaits a final signature, our licensed funeral directors can serve your family today.
Soil transformation is a process where a body is gently transformed into nutrient-rich soil. Also known as natural organic reduction or human composting, the process involves placing a body in a purpose-built, individual vessel with organic materials like mulch and wood chips. Over a period of 30 to 45 days, naturally occurring microbes break down the body, creating soil that can be used to grow new life. This offers a way to return to the earth, nurturing an ongoing ecosystem after death.

Momentum for this green alternative is growing across the country, and New Jersey is part of the movement. Bill A4085/S3007 recently passed both houses of the state legislature with overwhelming bipartisan support (37-2 Senate vote and 79-1 House vote) with some asking when will human composting be legal in New Jersey?
The bill is now awaiting a final signature from Governor Murphy and once signed, this will formally add "natural organic reduction" (also called âcontrolled supervised decompositionâ in the bill) to New Jersey's list of approved disposition methods and New Jersey will become the 14th state to legalize the practice.
With the Governorâs signature, New Jersey will join a growing number of states that have legalized the process, including Washington, Colorado, Oregon, Vermont, Nevada, California, New York, Minnesota, Maryland, Delaware, Maine, Georgia, and Arizona.

As families consider human composting as an alternative to cremation and burial, questions naturally arise about what happens to bones, dental work, and medical implants during the process.
