For years, families up and down the East Coast have reached out to us with the same message: "We love what you're doing. When can we access it?"
Today, we have an answer.
Earth Funeral has officially opened the first-ever human composting facility on the East Coast, in Elkridge, Maryland. At nearly 37,000 square feet, it is also the largest soil transformation center in the United States.
This isn't just a building. It's a turning point.
A New Chapter for Green Death Care
When we opened our first facility in Washington State in 2020, we were one of the only options for families seeking a gentle, natural alternative to burial and cremation. Today, the landscape has transformed. Fourteen states have legalized natural organic reduction, fifteen more are actively considering it, and demand is surging, driven by families who want their final act to give back to the planet.
But legislation only determines where a facility can be sited. Earth Funeral has always been available to families nationwide, regardless of where they live. What the Maryland facility changes is something more practical: proximity.
"The more people learn about our gentle, eco-friendly process, the more they are turning to us for end-of-life planning," said Tom Harries, Earth's CEO. "Today's opening of our Maryland facility, the nation's first East Coast facility, solves our number one challenge: local accessibility. Families along the East Coast want their final act to give back to the planet, and this investment will help them do just that."
Earth Funeral now operates three facilities: our original location in Washington State, a facility in Nevada, and now Maryland. Together, they form a network capable of serving families coast to coast, with the Maryland location bringing soil transformation within reach of the densely populated Mid-Atlantic corridor, and expanding access into the Midwest, including families in states like Illinois and Ohio.
Why Maryland, Why Now
The East Coast is home to tens of millions of people who care deeply about sustainability, are rethinking legacy, and want end-of-life choices that align with their values. Until now, accessing soil transformation meant coordinating long-distance transport to our facilities in the Pacific Northwest or Nevada.
The Maryland facility changes that entirely.
Earth Funeral is, at heart, an environmental company. Our mission is to make soil transformation available to as many families as possible, and that means meeting people where they are. Situated at the center of the Eastern Seaboard, Maryland gives us the widest possible service area: families from Maine to Georgia, from the Mid-Atlantic coast into the Midwest.
From families in Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey to those in Ohio, Illinois, and beyond, the goal was simple: find the location that lets the most families say yes.
And like everything Earth Funeral does, the Maryland facility operates on 100% renewable energy.
The Same Gentle Process, Now Closer to Home
If you're new to soil transformation, here's how it works:
Your loved one is wrapped in a biodegradable shroud and placed in one of our proprietary stainless steel vessels alongside organic mulch, wood chips, and wildflowers. Over approximately 30 to 45 days, naturally occurring microbes gently transform the body into approximately 300 pounds of nutrient-rich soil. Our stainless steel vessels use advanced sensors to carefully optimize temperature, oxygen, and moisture levels throughout, all powered by renewable energy, all made in America.
The resulting soil undergoes rigorous independent laboratory testing to ensure it exceeds EPA standards for pathogen reduction. What's returned to your family is pure, living earth, free of inorganic materials, full of life.
Families can plant their soil beneath a memorial tree. Spread it somewhere meaningful. Share it with loved ones. Or donate it to conservation projects that restore ecosystems and regenerate landscapes.
For those planning ahead, there is something profound about knowing what you will become. Families tell us it brings a sense of completion, a sense of ease with mortality, freeing them to focus more fully on living. Rather than avoid the question of death, they've answered it, on their own terms, in a way that feels meaningful and true.
For grieving families, the timeline of transformation naturally mirrors the early weeks of loss: a period of change, not absence. And when the soil is returned, it becomes something to tend. A tree to visit. A garden to care for. A living place to return to, long after the physical goodbye. The connection doesn't end. It takes root.

Accessible Pricing, Now More Accessible Geography
Soil transformation with Earth Funeral is priced at approximately $6,000, meaningfully less than the national average for full-service burial ($9,184) and full-service cremation ($6,721). With the Maryland facility now open, families in the eastern United States can access these services without the added cost and complexity of long-distance transport.
Our end-to-end packages include:
- Services of a licensed funeral director
- Collection and care from place of passing
- Filing of all necessary paperwork and permits
- Transportation to our facility
- The soil transformation process
- The soil returned to your family
- Worldwide travel protection
- Access to the Earth Family Portal

A Note on Legislation
Legalization of soil transformation at the state level determines where a facility can be opened, but it does not prevent residents of any state from choosing our services. If you live in a state where soil transformation isn't yet legal, Earth Funeral can still serve your family, coordinating transportation to one of our licensed facilities and returning your soil to you at home.
Here's where things stand for families served by our East Coast facility:
Pre-Plan Today
One of the most meaningful gifts you can give your family is a clear plan. Earth Funeral offers flexible pre-planning options that let you lock in current pricing, document your wishes, and spare your family from making over 125 decisions while grieving.
Pre-planning takes just minutes and can be completed online, by phone, or in person. And with the Maryland facility now open, pre-planning for East Coast families is more practical than ever.
Thank You for Waiting
To every family who has emailed, called, or filled out a form asking when we'd be closer to home: thank you. Your patience, your curiosity, and your belief in what we're building made this facility possible.
The East Coast has been waiting. We're glad to finally be here.
