How human composting works in Virginia
Human composting, also called soil transformation, natural organic reduction, or terramation, is a 45-day process that turns a body into life-supporting soil. Your loved one rests in a proprietary vessel with natural materials while the transformation takes place.
When the process is complete, our Care Team will help you decide how much soil you’d like returned. If you choose not to keep it all, we can arrange donation of the remaining soil through local and regional conservation projects.
Because human composting is not yet legal in Virginia, we work with regional funeral homes and transport providers to bring your loved one into our care and transport them to the nearest Earth facility where the process is permitted.
