How human composting works in San Diego
Our process, often called soil transformation, natural organic reduction, or terramation, transforms a body into life-giving soil over the course of 45 days. This transition occurs within a proprietary vessel using organic materials to return a life lived back to earth. Once complete, San Diegan families choose the volume of soil to be returned; any remaining soil is donated to conservation projects for vital land restoration.
California’s authorization of human composting is currently in the implementation phase. In the meantime, Earth assists San Diego families by coordinating transport to our human composting facility. This allows San Diegans to choose a sustainable return to the earth despite the current lack of in-state facilities.
