1 min readIt is officially legal for Minnesota residents to be transformed into soil after they pass, thanks to the passage of HF2669, sponsored by Rep. John Huot. The bill will go into effect on July 1, 2025.
Minnesota is the 11th state to legalize human composting, following Maryland, Delaware, Arizona, and Nevada, which all approved bills in recent months.
Human composting, also known as natural organic reduction or soil transformation, is a process in which a human body is placed in a climate-controlled vessel with organic materials like mulch and wood chips. The vessel's climate is optimized for naturally occurring microbes to break down the body into nutrient-rich soil over 30 to 45 days.
The legalization of human composting in Minnesota makes it possible for existing funeral homes to offer this service and for human composting providers to build new facilities in Minnesota.
The passage of HF2669 marks exciting progress for an increasing number of people who are concerned about the environmental impact of traditional burial and cremation. They want a simpler, carbon-neutral option when they die—and human composting is just that. The legalization of human composting makes it possible for Minnesota residents to return to the Earth after death, to nurture ongoing life as part of a healthy ecosystem.
Minnesotans will still have to wait at least a year until human composting is accessible in their state. In the meantime, Earth Funeral can work with out-of-state families by transporting loved ones to our facilities.
