How human composting works in New York City
Through natural organic reduction, a body is transformed into nourishing soil over the course of 30-45 days. Often referred to as human composting, soil transformation, or terramation, this process takes place within a proprietary vessel using organic materials to facilitate a natural transition.
Once complete, our Care Team helps you determine the amount of soil you would like returned, while the remainder is donated to conservation projects for vital land restoration.
Although Earth does not currently operate a physical facility within New York, our Care Team helps coordinate transport into our care and to our nearest facility. We are actively working toward expanding our facility services to New York State in 2026.
Earth is opening a state-of-the-art facility in Maryland in April of 2026, which will service families in The Big Apple. We coordinate care in your area, then transfer your loved one to the nearest Earth facility. Our expert Care Team guides you from start to finish.
