Spreading Soil In New York

Last Revised: Jun 18, 2026

Under New York law, transformed soil that remains in New York must be placed in a cemetery. It cannot be kept at home for a memorial garden or houseplants. Families can either have the soil delivered to a participating New York cemetery, or donate it to one of our regional conservation partners outside New York.

If the soil is moved to another state, that state's rules apply, which may allow private spreading or keeping the soil at home.

The cemeteries below have indicated openness to receiving transformed soil. Since each handles requests individually, we encourage families to confirm availability directly with the cemetery before making arrangements.
