CBS Mornings explores human composting as an eco-friendly death care option, featuring Earth Funeral's process and growing acceptance across multiple states.
"So instead of being cremated and turned into ash, you're getting gently transformed into soil," explained Tom Harries, CEO and founder of Earth Funeral, during his appearance on "CBS Mornings Plus." The segment examined human composting as an environmentally conscious alternative to traditional burial and cremation, highlighting how the process accelerates natural decomposition through science and technology over approximately 30 days.
Harries shared his personal journey from operating an online cremation company to founding Earth Funeral after realizing he didn't want to be cremated due to the pollutive nature of the process. CBS explored how the method, first legalized in Washington state in 2020, has now been adopted by 11 additional states including Oregon, California, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Minnesota, Vermont, New York, Maine, Maryland and Delaware.
The segment emphasized the versatility of the resulting soil, which families can keep, scatter, plant, or donate to conservation projects for reforestation, ecosystem restoration, and wildfire restoration efforts.
