Earth Funeral provides an alternative to burial or cremation, whereby human remains are composted over appx 30 days into soil. Along with 4 friends we toured the Auburn, WA facility to learn firsthand the entire process. Our salesman was good. We left him with unanswered questions. The next day I recieved a call back from either his manager or company owner. We talked for about 45 minutes completely covering our questions and much more. I was impressed by the company, it's dedication to the environment and professionalism. I'd be hard pressed to write another review after I use the services purchased for myself! I have never wanted to have my body buried - such a total waste of land. So the only other option I was aware of was cremation. But this alternative to me is in sync with my thoughts about being a doner - make use of our bodies after we're gone. It just makes sense to me. Donate what is useful and return the nutrients for further life in another form with what is left. My only wish to is come up with a different name than 'compost'. That word makes sense, but hits less than positive images - in my brain at least. :slightly_smiling_face:

If I had a supply of brochures, I'd be handing them out to most of my friends, because the concept is not familiar to most of them. They are planning cremation, in many cases, because they don't know a more environmentally conscious option is available. It's time to get my end-of-life affairs in order and I was looking for a "green burial". I discovered Earth soil transformation "burials" and compared having my body composted to a green burial in the local green cemetery. For one thing, the price to have my body composted is much more reasonable than buying 70 square feet of real estate in the county where I live in Washington. I also simply love the idea of my body being turned into compost and then reused to grow trees and indigenous plants in a deforested area on the Olympic Peninsula. What a lovely place to rest. Before I made the commitment to this process I took a tour of the facility. It is so cool! Minimal carbon footprint, very positive impact on the environment. Plus it is a startup which is exciting to support. Frankly I find the entire process of body composting to be rather futuristic, fun, a little wacky, and just very cool. I feel so satisfied that I have chosen this method. It was easy and everyone was friendly and supportive. The person I worked with was there for me but did not get pushy as I was considering the options. I'm telling everyone I know about it and so many are interested. My wife was very much attuned to nature and ecology. She always expressed a desire to have her body just be returned to nature in the most ecological friendly and beneficial way possible. When she passed recently in October 2023, I honored her wishes and researched green burials. We live in California, and I found out green burials (that is composting of remains) was legalized in CA, but does not take effect until 2027. However, since Earth Funeral is based in Washington state, where it is legal, I contacted them. I still needed to go through a local funeral home in CA to handle the paperwork, such as the Death Certificates, pick up my wife's remains and work with Earth to arrange an air flight to SEA-TAC. Everything on both ends went smoothly and Amelia from Earth was exceptionally nice and responsive. It was all worth the money. There are family and friends of my wife who asked to have one set of soil (32oz container and 1 oz Keepsake). I am going to instruct my next of kin to use Earth Funeral when it is my turn.

The option to have our remains converted into compost, rather than ash by cremation or bones by traditional burial is the only reasonable option given the fact that the process requires nearly zero energy emissions, unlike cremation, and results in giving life to organic matter should the soil be used to restore a forest and/or a garden owned by a loved one. We had a great experience with Earth. We had learned of composting when it was first approved in Washington State and reached out when we learned it was approved here in Oregon. All of our questions were answered, both with the process and with the financing. The process was clearly the most earth-friendly, both from the reduction in climate changing releases and in reducing the space required to dispose of our remains. The financing met our desire to pre-pay with no risk the funding won't be there when needed. Most important Earth takes care of all arrangements. None of our children or grandchildren need to deal with permits, transportation and the like. I just love the truly natural process offered. It makes sense. It helps the Earth. As a compost-loving gardener, it is fitting. My children are supportive. Earth rather than ashes seems much more a Celebration of Life Lived.

Excellent and personalized customer service by folks who are caring and compassionate and are happy to answer questions. I was thrilled to see that Earth expanded their service area to Oregon recently! I just made my pre-arrangements with them, and it could not have been easier. The team was also kind and supportive (though, I might be a bit biased, given that I have a family member who works there!). I recently had a revocable trust/ DPOA/Advance drawn up (after a close friend died without having anything planned) and decided to have my final arrangements taken care of too. I was contacted by 3 separate people from Earth on Memorial Day when I was having difficulty with the online application and have followed up with Amelia who was very helpful. We have been looking for alternatives to cremation and having remains returned to the earth in some useful form looked like the answer. The direct burial sites are too far away and sounded like you would need to recruit you own team to accomplish that. The process has been thoroughly explained included the financial details. We sincerely hope that your services for Bob won't be needed for a long time but it is reassuring to have the end details arranged so that we can focus on each day until then.
