I heard about this concept from my niece. I contacted Earth and found the facts. When you're gone, they pick your body up and prepare it with organic compounds. I was told it take about 7 months for the body to turn into compost. (But you don't have to worry, cause you won't be in it.) Then off to a location to be mixed with existing soil and rejuvenate the land! (Talk about getting your hands dirty!) I've always wanted to "return something to Mother Earth". This is the way to do it. We humans take and take from Earth. We leave nothing except scares and trash. (Also, a couple of ex-girlfriends thinks of me as dirt anyway, so this is only fitting.) [Joke]

It's a great idea and I think a lot of folks would rather return something to Earth, rather than be buried in a tomb. I'm not a Pharo and at my age the only things that will find me appealing are bugs and such. So being buried in a casket someone can dig up in 200 years; I think what they find will be disappointing. And I like the idea of the 5 trees being planted. (I hope they're planted somewhere in the USA.)

After researching the Earth Funeral materials, and our finances allowed, I contacted Chris for an in-person tour. Our daughter attended the tour & asked questions with us. Chris is very knowledgeable and answered our many questions & concerns. Chris was extremely welcoming. He showed us the facility and an up-close view of a vessel and samples of organic mulch, woodchips & wildflowers that will be added. Our 45-minute scheduled tour lasted over 1 1/2 hours, but Chris never made us feel it was time for us to leave! I have already given the EARTH pamphlets to my cousin & best friend. I have shared information with my family & friends. I even made a presentation to my 2 Granddaughters who are in their 20's. The event of having to pick out a coffin or an urn to eventually be placed in is a very surreal experience. There are multiple designs and features to pick out but at the end of the day, it’s all going into the ground to hopefully never be seen again. The cremation process seems a little less involved but you still need to pick out a $1k or more urn. It’s all seemed too wasteful to me. When I heard about Earth and the services they provide, it was like a spa before eternal rest. Wildflowers and a shroud? Sounds perfect. Family can take some of your soil in a small compostable bin? Love that it’s waste-free! Trees get planted in my honor AND we get to help with reforestation? Literally sign me up. Everything about Earth has been out of a dream. The services are exactly what I’ve always looked for in a pre-arranged funeral service, the website was incredibly easy to navigate, and the customer service during the tour was top tier. Shoutout to Roe for being the most incredible representative at the Nevada location. If you’re thinking about checking it out or you’re even a little curious, I would say it is definitely worth the time to visit or speak with a representative. Along with 4 friends we toured the Auburn, WA facility to learn firsthand the entire process. Our salesman was good. We left him with unanswered questions. The next day I recieved a call back from either his manager or company owner. We talked for about 45 minutes completely covering our questions and much more. I have never wanted to have my body buried - such a total waste of land. So the only other option I was aware of was cremation. If I had a supply of brochures, I'd be handing them out to most of my friends, because the concept is not familiar to most of them. They are planning cremation, in many cases, because they don't know a more environmentally conscious option is available. The high cost is also a decision factor, but if more people were choosing this alternative, economy of scale will bring the cost within reach of more people.

It's time to get my end-of-life affairs in order and I was looking for a "green burial". I discovered Earth soil transformation "burials" and compared having my body composted to a green burial in the local green cemetery. For one thing, the price to have my body composted is much more reasonable than buying 70 square feet of real estate in the county where I live in Washington. I also simply love the idea of my body being turned into compost and then reused to grow trees and indigenous plants in a deforested area on the Olympic Peninsula. What a lovely place to rest. Before I made the commitment to this process I took a tour of the facility. It is so cool! Minimal carbon footprint, very positive impact on the environment. Plus it is a startup which is exciting to support. Frankly I find the entire process of body composting to be rather futuristic, fun, a little wacky, and just very cool. I feel so satisfied that I have chosen this method. It was easy and everyone was friendly and supportive. The person I worked with was there for me but did not get pushy as I was considering the options. I'm telling everyone I know about it and so many are interested. If you are at a stage in life where you're looking at getting your affairs in order and care about the earth this is a wonderful option to consider.

The only current downside to composting is that there are too few states doing it yet so there is still a carbon footprint to ship bodies to WA. My wife was very much attuned to nature and ecology. She always expressed a desire to have her body just be returned to nature in the most ecological friendly and beneficial way possible. When she passed recently in October 2023, I honored her wishes and researched green burials. We live in California, and I found out green burials (that is composting of remains) was legalized in CA, but does not take effect until 2027. However, since Earth Funeral is based in Washington state, where it is legal, I contacted them. I still needed to go through a local funeral home in CA to handle the paperwork, such as the Death Certificates, pick up my wife's remains and work with Earth to arrange an air flight to SEA-TAC. Everything on both ends went smoothly and Amelia from Earth was exceptionally nice and responsive. It was all worth the money. There are family and friends of my wife who asked to have one set of soil (32oz container and 1 oz Keepsake). I am going to instruct my next of kin to use Earth Funeral when it is my turn.

I've composted food scraps for years and would joke with my family that I wanted to be bokashied when I was gone and so when I read that Washington state was allowing a person to be composted it seemed a perfect fit. I read that the State Legislature had approved composting as a more environmentally-friendly alternative to coffins and cremation.
