Samuel Jackson of Seattle, WA, died on December 10, 2024, from prostate cancer; he was 77 years old. Samuel is survived by his wife, Susan; his four children, Aira and Mahkaea, from his first marriage; and Kalila and Henry. Samuel was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Sylvania, his brother Raymond; his sister, Vicki, his brother, Michael; niece, Gigi; and his nephew, Jared. He is survived by siblings Annette, Gloria Jean, Carmen, Keith, Troy, Lynn, and Kevin; his niece, Chyrrea; and his nephews, Marc, Eric, John, and Jaken. Samuel was born in Del Ray Beach, Florida. His parents tried sharecropping but decided that was not the life they wanted. They left the South and moved to Chester, Pennsylvania, during the Great Migration. Samuel enlisted in the Air Force when the Vietnam War began, and many of his friends and classmates were drafted into the Army. As an avionics technician, he was stationed in Thailand. His role was to maintain airplane instruments and sign off on planes before they could leave for missions over Vietnam. His experience in the Vietnam War impacted him for the rest of his life. Samuel reflected on his service during the war at his 70th birthday celebration. “I am one of the lucky guys.” He asked everyone in attendance to take a moment of silence “for all the other guys, who didn’t” [come home]. After moving to the Pacific Northwest, Samuel attended Seattle Central Community College, The Evergreen State College, and the University of Washington, where he received his Master of Librarianship (now Master of Library and Information Science). Samuel was a public service librarian in many local branches and downtown. For a time, he was a children’s librarian at Douglass Truth Library, where he was renowned for his storytelling. He retired in 2013. Samuel enjoyed spending time with his family, reading history, gardening, cooking, taking daily walks at Seward Park with his dogs, and traveling globally in retirement. Check this site in the future for the date and Seward Park location of a celebration of Samuel’s life.

Leave the earth with beauty

Earth specializes in soil transformation, an environmentally-friendly alternative to burial and cremation. Over a 45-day process, we gently transform a body into nutrient-rich soil. We then send this soil to our local conservation land where it’s used for restoration projects such as reforestation and nourishing challenged ecosystems.
