Gregory “Greg” Boyce October 11, 1954 – April 11, 2025 “Forever curious, always exploring.” Gregory “Greg” Boyce, 70, of Portland, Oregon, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2025, following complications from a brief but courageous battle with laryngeal cancer. In his final days, he was lovingly surrounded by close friends who shared stories, laughter, and memories - a fitting sendoff for someone who had touched so many lives. Born in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Greg carried with him the warmth and grounded spirit of the Midwest, which blended seamlessly with Portland’s creative, nature-loving energy - a city he called home for much of his life. Greg was a true renaissance soul. An avid outdoorsman, he had a deep passion for birding, reptiles, and native plant identification. He never ventured far without his field guides and binoculars, always ready to spot a rare warbler or name a blooming wildflower. Nature wasn’t just a hobby; it was his lifelong classroom. In the kitchen, Greg was an innovator. He was constantly experimenting with new ingredients, spices, and techniques, often blending unexpected flavors into one-of-a-kind fusion dishes. As co-founder of the Corbett Fishhouses and the Hawthorne Fish House, he brought Midwestern comfort food to Portland with a healthier twist, creating a space where food, community, and creativity thrived. Greg’s natural curiosity made him a perpetual student of life. Whether diving into a new reference book, tackling a unique recipe, playing chess or go, or learning something from someone he just met, he was always asking questions and encouraging others to see the world with wonder. He is survived by his loving siblings: Barbara Patton (Mark Patton). Laura Robinson (Perry Robinson) , Stacie Strenn,(Jim Strenn) and Charles (Chuck) Boyce, and a wide circle of friends who became his chosen family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Boyce and Margret Kroll and brother William (Bill) Boyce. A celebration of Greg’s life will take place on a yet to be determined date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Greg’s name can be made to the Native Plant Society or Friends of Trees.

Leave the earth with beauty

Earth specializes in soil transformation, an environmentally-friendly alternative to burial and cremation. Over a 45-day process, we gently transform a body into nutrient-rich soil. We then send this soil to our local conservation land where it’s used for restoration projects such as reforestation and nourishing challenged ecosystems.
